I just found out I have to. That sucks because I was planning on spending the day with my child who doesn't live with me. My family and I were going to get together. I see my child once a week but with school that isn't much. It is a great disappoitment that I will spend the entire day from morning till night at work. How do I break it to my family that I can't see them on the holiday? Also I am working the weekend everyday before it so I can't celebrate with them on the weekend either.

I couldn't ask for the day off because there are only 3 of us trained in the department and one is the manager and she is giving herself the day off. On top of that , although I get double pay, they have given me 3 days off this week, so I will not be making any extra money. If I had been off on Labor day and worked the other days I would have made the same amount. What good is it to get paid double and then lose an additional day of work?

I don't this year. Alot of businesses make the lower employees (anyone under the Manager) work holidays. One year I worked Labor day and was supposed to get double time for working that plus I would get extra for working overtime...but the company said that the holiday pay counted as the overtime. So, I worked 40 hours plus the 8 hours for Labor day and got 8 extra hours of pay instead of Holiday pay plus overtime pay...it stunk!!

Unless it is in the company policy that it is one of your holidays off, then you have to work. If it is in your company policy as a holiday and they want you to work, they are obligated to pay you overtime for those hours you work. It is either 1 1/2 times or 2 1/2 time of what you normally make for that day. I would see if someone would switch with me. If they won't they I guess you would have to go ahead and work. There are a lot of people who have to work on holidays, like telephone operators, policemen, firemen, just to mention a few. I know it is upsetting, especialy when you have plans. I was a local and long distance operator back in the early 70's (before everything was so computerized) and I had to work Christmas, Mother's day, and a lot of other holidays, because the operators with the most seniority got the better hours, and their choice of holidays off.

I do not have to work on labor day and I think it should be a holiday for everyone.

If you were planning something, you should have asked off...
You can still try to switch with someone.
Otherwise, you just have to tell them you have to work.

Couple things here...first of all, if it was that important to you then you should have taken the initiative & responsability to discuss scheduling ahead so that you were prepared for this...and to answer your initial question....YES, I work every single day of every single month of every single year. I am a mother & my work is never ending...so enjoy your days off!
