It is very unlikely that any properly prescribed eye drops would cause permanent loss of vision or other visual problems. It is likely an allergic reaction to the eye drops or a worsening of the underlying condition. As a precautionary measure, you should immediately discontinue any applications of the eye drops. If the problem persists for more than a few hours, you should consider taking your husband to the local Emergency (Accident and Casualty) Room of the nearest hospital. If it is not a medical emergency, see the doctor who prescribed the medication as soon as possible to re-evaluate the prescription and examine the eyes to ensure that there is no reason for concern.

How long has this condition been. Some people are very senstive to chemicals that dilate the pupols of the eye. These are used to prevent the patient from squinting and thus presenting the wrong eye prescription. Certain people are very susceptible to those compounds. (usually chemical derivatives of the drug atropine). This slow drug clearance can take several days. African Americans are more prone to the problem.
If the condition has persisted for more than 48 hours get to a hospital emergency room and have the problem looked into, stat.

Some drops will keep the eyes dilated for several hours, but then vision returns to normal. If it's beyond that, you better get it checked out...

Call the doctor's office and speak with him/her. If they aren't available, go to the hospital or a walk in clinic. Good Luck to you.
