If there are details on average commercial time during a televised game that would be interesting to me as well.

wow...you mean total time....
that depends on the game...and the teams possession time.

But the clock ticks away possession seconds as the ball sits on the field...and it's NOT in play at all.
- so...i could guestimate 15 actual minutes where the ball is in play...vs 45 minutes of overall possession by any given team.

It completely depends on the game and the teams playing.

Commercial time is a given...I can't answer that but I do know there is a set time.

The above answers didn't even attempt to answer your question. Here you go.
128+122+129+134=513/4=128 average plays per game * 7 seconds per play= 896 total seconds per game 896/60= 14 minutes and 56 seconds.
I took four of this weeks games and they had an average of 128 plays per game. 128 plays at 7 seconds per play equals about 15 minutes.
Therefore the ball is only in play about 15 minutes per game!

About 2 years ago I recorded only the plays of a football game as I had the same curiosity and it was about 11 minutes.

15 minute quarters, so it's a 1-hour game (just playing time). With commercials, it's about 3 hours.

Four 15 minute quarters would be 60 minutes of the ball being in play

When the ball is not in play the clock stops, so I guess the answer is 60 minutes, 15 mins/qrt.

60 live minutes but averages about 180 minutes due to commercials halftime and quarter breaks time outs and dead ball plays.
