There are some distributions of GNU/Linux which are designed more for serious server machines, and they leave out some of the eye candy. Sometimes it takes more work to learn to administer them properly.

Two quick things to try as far as fixing your current setup. First, make sure apache is listening on the internet side, try bringing up a terminal window and typing "netstat -tupan".

Then try bringing up your browser and typing locahost in the URL bar, to make sure your server is running.

Finally, if you have a plain old home internet connection, your ISP may block port 80 (the standard http port). You can listen on a different port, but be aware you may be violating your terms of use agreement with your ISP.

Ok, that was three instead of two. I guess I can't count.

You can try RedHat Linux.
You can try checking the configuration file of your current Apache web server (httpd.conf) first before changing the Operating System, but RedHat is more or less stable and widely used by people. Mandrake is a popular option too, but the user interface varies.

Good luck
