So when you look in your rear view mirror at the ambulance behind you, you can read it, and get out of it's way to let it get to the sick and injured as quickly as possible. Fire trucks have the same thing, at least in my part of the world, and you'll find it on some car/trucks as well, with their business name on them.

It's supposed to be because they were behind slow motorists that didn't get out of the way. When you look back at the ECNALUBMA in your rear view Mirror you see it double mirrored to AMBULANCE. Then I guess you go, "Holy crud it's an ECNALUBMA! I better pull over!"
