Because many people have asthma and allergies. Why should they be exposed to your stinkiness just because you can't kick a habit? Or because you don't care about the wellbeing of others? Kill yourself on your own time, where people aren't forced to be inflicted with it.
Also, chewing tobacco does have a smell, if you're within about twenty feet in an enclosed space. It's disgusting.

Eh, gross.
I'm an asthmatic. The bad kind. The kind that has had to carry O2 everywhere. Smoke (campfires, burning leaves, cigarettes) can send me to the ER and into ICU for a few days with a tube shoved into my lungs.
It's very unpleasant and I'm lucky to live Cali where the whole state is pretty much smoke free. But I always have to be careful when I'm out on the street. I accept that and I am careful. If I have to move, or if I have to ask someone (like in a line outside the theater for example) I'm very polite and explain the situation - and everyone I've met has always been understanding to my situation (who doesn't know an asthmatic these days).
But inside a class room, a cafe, a shop - I should have every right to there without having to worry about plugging into my O2 and inhalers because someone wants to smoke.
And a classroom - it's an educational environment - it should be free of distraction for everyone. Smoke can be unpleasant for other people. Same as loud music from a headset, or talking on a cell phone, or a conversation while the professor is at the podium. It invades other peoples spaces and it's not like they can't really stop it from blowing their way.
To me the issue is divided like this: who has a greater right, the person who wants to smoke or the one who doesn't want to have an asthma attack?

Well...I have asthma, and i have a hard time breathing outside when near a smoker. You are not allowed to smoke in a class room because people HAVE to be there, and if they need to excuse themselves so they can go BREATHE...they are missing class. Second hand smoke casues cancer...read the Marlboro website! Chewing tobacco only hurts the chewer. I live in California and some cities have banned smoking on public streets! No smoking in bars, clubs, restaurants, stores...It is wonderful for me because I have asthma attacks from the smoke. I am sorry if you cant smoke in a classroom...go run 50 laps and then breathe threw a swizzle stick and you will know what it is like to have to breathe smoke as a non smoker.

some people are picky. they don't like the smoke, dont want to smell like cigarettes, or the smell of cigars and cigarettes gives them a headache. also, secondhand smoke is very dangerous and also in a classroom is where youre first told in life to say 'no' to tobacco, so that'd be a bit odd. some people could be allergic or trying to quit and that wouldnt help them at all. others could have lung problems or some health problems where that could complicate it. i see your point though.

Hey,,, I agree with you 100%, I can actually remember smoking in the classroom when I was in college less than 25 yrs ago...
Not now,,,, i went back for a masters around 10 yrs later,,, and it was a taboo....
Like you though, people can chew tobacco and spit in a cup,,, and inevitably leave the nasty spit cup for all to deal with....
Even in the office,, this practice goes on,,, to me it is just awful... and just as demeaning to us that are smokers......
Good luck

It can be irritating to the other students. Some people are actually allergic to cigarette smoke or can have severe asthma reactions. Personally, I don't like being around people smoking and find it to be irritating.

because it creates a thing called second hand smoke and gives cancer to your non-smoking classmates.
nobody cares if you want to suck smoke into your lungs in your own time but nobody else wants to breath in your second hand smoke.
so thats the reason why you cant smoke in a classroom or almost any other indoor area.

Because, as untrue as it is, the government has been able to convince the majority of uninformed Americans that any form of second-hand smoke causes cancer. The state of California even went so far as to enact a state law barring smoking in any private establishment.
The truth is, there is no good answer for why smoking is not allowed in University classrooms where the students are expected to be more informed than the general public.
