There was a local band around the area that I grew up called "Lillian Axe". I actually found some of their songs on bearshare recently. They are a band from the 80"s but they have some really great songs.

I like Finch, Scars of Life, Powerman 5000, and the Dresden Dolls uhhh I'm not sure to how well known these ppl r but i dont hear much of them on the radio(internet radio too so......) and i just found out Finch broke up btu heres anotha band From First To Last they're known but is an AWESOME band!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I'm not sure if your refering to metal music, but since i'm more familiar with that, why not try Blind Guardian, Arch Enemy, Emperor, Iced Earth and Moonspell ; Female-fronted bands like Nightwish, Leaves Eyes and Lacuna Coil.
