The Dragonriders of Pern - by ANNE McCAFFREY
This series has affected my life in many ways. Here are just a few:
- I have come to understand that bravery is not just in "slaying dragons" but can be found in the smallest of actions,
- Happiness is not what happens to you, but a choice you make (along with respect and kindness... these traits are chosen and not because the person is gullible or dumb),
- What a true bond of friendship and companionship looks like (in, I'll admit, an extreem way but....)
- most importantly that there is no greater gift than each other.
- and that the world CAN exist without war. In the premis of the book most people if you mentioned what war was would make them sick. In place of war between people there is the war for survival.
- It also has inspired me to write a novel and
- has inpired me in many ways along the path of becomming a good writer... I use her work as one of many examples for learning.

Offhand I can think of a couple of books that have had influence in me somehow.

1. The Greatest Salesman in the World by Og Mandino.
2. How to Win Friends & Influence People by Dale Carnegie

Whenever I feel that I am getting too...I dont know, ordinary I guess, for lack of a better word....I read Kerouac. On the Road...usually. Not that I'm planning on becoming a gypsy, or a nomad..but it just reminds me that there is more to life than work, books, etc..
The first time I read Kerouac....I was floored that somebody actually had the balls to do the stuff he did....of course, he did it in the 50's, when that sort of stuff was safer, but anyway..he amazed me.

"Worlds In Collision" by Velikovsky. I read it about 40 years ago and it affected my concept of science. He used ancient writings to document the idea that the earth's orbit was disrupted, during more-or-less historical times, by a comet passing close to it. It was rather persuasive. Scientists were upset by it because its method was not scientific but historical. They were, in fact, upset because he suggested that an astronomical catastrophe could even occur. He made some statements about the orbits and rotations of other planets, which could not be known by scientific means then, that later proved to be correct. I'm pretty sure the scientific community never gave him credit or apology, but now it is accepted that we could be impacted by a comet or asteroid.

'Catcher In The Rye' is a pretty amazing book. I also really enjoyed 'Trainspotting' by Irvine Welsh. But I'm not really sure that any book has "changed" my life.

Room in the Heart (Historical Fiction) It emphasized the idea of togetherness and that humans can eventually overcome critical problems by working cooperatively with one another and by providing assistance to those in need in order to prevent the unjust from happening.
