Yes it is, and on so many different levels. I loved it when younger, lost interst and fondness, and have recently found renewed appreciation not only for the story line, but for the character development and insight into the human psyche the characters collectively represent.
I also think it was one of the best cast movies ever. Can you imagine any other Scarlet, Rhett, Melanie or Ashley?
Another thing I have learned to appreciate was how true they were to the time. Unlike Dr. Zhivago, where everyone wore 70's hairstyles.

I don't know about the best but it sure is close. I'm a big fan of both Paul Newman and Bette Davis and my top three fave movies are Until they Sail (P. Newman), Now, Voyager(Bette Davis), and of course, Gone with The Wind. You gotta love Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh. They're magic together!

compared to the quality of the films today, then yes. but compared to the older films, maybe not. but it is a good movie. im a teen ager and it appealed to me. the only problem is when they deliver their dialogue, it is so quick that you will need to play it again and have subtitle.
it is like a movie version of a telenovela/ soap opera.
if you like those genre then this movie will be the best film ever made.

As you can see by the responses, everybody has their own ideas about what makes a classic movie.
I might give the nod to Citizen Kane. My only problem with Citizen Kane is that everybody knows Kane said "Rosebud" when he died. But he died ALONE. Hello?? Nobody was there to hear it! So, the rest of the movie doesn't work.

I don't know why so many people liked it. It was so long and the main character was such a drama queen, and the end made absolutely no sense to me. I'm glad I saw it when it came on TV and there were commercials breaks, otherwise I wouldn't be able to handle it. I needed those breaks.

When it was released in 1939 it was, but there have been some very great movies since. It has always been one of my favourites. They stayed very close to the book and for it's time, the acting was great.
