I have been trying to get pregnant for a year and a half. I have never had a regular period schedule (in fact this year I have had 4 total, one in January, one in March, and two in August). I made an appointment with a Reproductive Endocrinologist (fertility dr), and am nervous about what to expect on my first visit. My husband will be going with me. I filled out the paper work and all that stuff that the sent me, but I'm just curious, is the first visit more of a question/answer session, or do they start doing exams and such. I'm 24 years old, been married for 2 years, and we really want to start a family. Anyone have any advice on what to expect?

As the previous answerer wrote, they'll ask about your cycle, about how long you've been trying, what you've been doing (inc. frequency of sex). They also ask about lifestyle - smoking, drugs, alcohol, medications, etc and about general health (diseases in the family, in childhood, etc.)

Usually the first tests they will send you for are for blood tests on day 3 of your cycle and a semen analysis for your husband. Even if the doctor suspects that your irregular cycles are the source of the problem, it's a good idea to rule out the fact that the sperm is a problem before focusing on your cycle.

You can just relax and feel like this is the first step toward achieving your goal of having a baby. The doctor has already seen many, many couples like you.

I have been to a RE doctor already myself. He/She will ask you questions about your health and probably what you have been doing to get pregnant--like how long you have been trying, etc. Be prepared to give information on the pattern of your menstrual cycle--how long the cycle lasts--and if you are using any ovulation tests and know what day you typically get a positive.

The doctor may run some tests. I am over 35, so the tests he had me do will probalby be different for you since you are 24. It just depends. Just go in and relax. This is what they do and they are professionals. Don't be embarassed and asnwer all the questions as honestly as you can. I took a notebook and wrote down things he was telling me because I was so nervous I knew I would forget what he said. I would advise that for you. I have a very nice doctor and a nurse who are very patient and answer all the questions I call about all the time. They have seen plenty of women with your situation and they can sympathize with you. I wish you all the luck in the world. I hope it works out for you.

Are you over weight? You may have PCOS which cause irregular period and lots of otherthings. More or less they might give you an u/s and blood work. Most of the time its a consultation
