I'm trying to use a Dl-524 wireless router and make my notebook pc wireless. I get as far as entering the 192.168.0.1 as an IP, to bring up the system configuration box. I've tried "admin" as username and the same for a password. Another site says it should be "admin" for username, password should be left blank. None of these work, after 3 tries, I get a 401 unauthorized error message. Can anyone suggest what to do from here?

apparently, there have been several revisions to that model, and the help you need depends on which model you have.

There should be a manual or foldout that came with the router which will tell you what the default password is. If you have set it up in the past and don't know what it is you will need to reset the device to factory by pressing the reset button. You will probably want to check DLinks site as to the proper hard reset steps.
