the Akashi Kaikyo bridge in Japan takes the title, with a main span of 1,991 meters (or 6,532 feet). There are bridges that actually cover longer distances, especially in the cable-stayed category, but the general rule in judging record-breaking bridges seems to be to consider the longest span, or the longest point-to-point connection without a pier or arch underneath.
The second resource spotted elaborated even further. The 40-page PDF document from the American Institute of Steel Construction, titled "World's Largest Bridge Spans," details the location, year, and length of 10 different types of spans, from suspension bridges to prestressed concrete girder bridges. (Longest of the latter? Boca Tigris in Guangdong, China, at 886 feet.)
At the head of the class was the Akashi bridge, as noted above, which was completed in 1998. However, what found even more fascinating was the mention of a bridge, still being designed, that will cross the Messina strait from mainland Italy to the island of Sicily, covering 10,827 feet in the process.

The Lake Pontchartrain Causeway, or the Causeway, consists of two parallel bridges that are the longest bridges in the world by total length. The two bridges feature bascule spans over the navigation channel 8 miles (13 km) south of the north shore. The southern terminus of the Causeway is in Metairie, Louisiana, a suburb of New Orleans. The northern terminus is at Mandeville,
