Sounds like you need a new battery. We have a laptop that does that. It's quite old now so we just plug it in and I'm not going to bother replacing the battery because it's not worth it to me..

Yep, you'll need a new battery, chances are the previous owner kept it plugged in all the time, which kills the battery's ability to hold a charge.
When you do get the new battery, be sure to fully charge it, use it until it's fully discharged, and then recharge it.

you could either returned to laptop and get your money back
or
you could buy a new battery for the laptop
or
complain to the place where you bought your laptop that the battery is not functioning properly and ask for a replacement battery.

be careful of that, the back piece that you plug the adapter in just broke on mine and it was almost 300 to fix, but i got some much money in mine it didnt make sense to buy another, yet
