there are 2 races left in the Chase and there are 10 for the NEXTEL for a grand total of 12 left for the year

They are both right in a way. There are two races left. At the end of those two races, all the points already earned this season will be erased. The top 10 drivers only will have the chance to win the cup, since it is very unlikely that anyone below that would mathematically have a chance to win. The lineup will still contain 43, any one of which is allowed to win any given race, and they can be spoilers, but cannot win the cup. There are 10 of those races. There are therefore, 12 races left before the cup is awarded.

There are two races left until the points get reset and the top 10 drivers enter "The Chase for the Cup". In the last 10 races of the season, the top 10 drivers will be competing against each other for the Nextel Cup.
Drivers that aren't in those top 10 in points will still be racing, and will still be able to win any of the RACES remaining in the season, but they are unable to win the Nextel Cup.

There are 36 races in a season. 24 races have been run, which means there are 12 races left. But with 10 races left, the points get seperated by 5 points by where you are. But that is 2 races away.
