Mono is a single audio channel, as opposed to stereo, which is multiple tracks, whether it's traditional 2 channel, 4 channel, 5.1, it's all stereo.

Digital has to do with how the sound is recorded, it basically means the sound is converted to a series of 1s and 0s, which when played back, are re-translated into sound, as opposed to analog, which directly records the sound wave onto the recording media.

to my understanding, digital and mono are not opposites. Digital refers to the way the data is stored (1's and 0's... burned into a cd, an mp3) verses analog (a cassette or record, physical vibrations being amplified). Mono would be one channel of sound, or all speaker playing the sames. Stereo would be two channels and then surround sound and junk.
