Your best bet, if you have something you believe in, is to look into patent or copyright protection first, then bring it to the companies. Record all companies and people with which you communicate, in the event that a similar product miraculously appears. And be sure to not move too quickly if you are not completely satisfied with the terms offered to you: If the company gets too worried that someone else will seize your product, then they will have no choice but to make you a better offer.
