The HD requires 20 W (maybe) for the motor & R/W arms? 10 for the CD and DVD? Maybe 10 more for burners? 15 to 25 for the electronics? I've got an Ext USB 3.5 in FDD - 5?

That's a total of 70w. But regular use is the HD & electronics. Why the overkill?

I have no fancy video card & the HP exhaust fan is extremely quiet. The answers I've received have CPU power all over the place. My fault. More details follow:

HP w/ xp Home, AMD Athlon 3200+ w/ HeatSink, 512MB RAM, 160 GB HD. Processor is NOT overclocked.

The Processor itself consumes more than 70 watts

The big users are not listed, namely the video card and CPU. The CPU can use 130+ watts, and the video card 120+. That's 250 right there!

I think you're underestimating a bit. I know that my new video card (a Radeon X1300) states that the system must have at least 300W. I can imagine that a SLI or Cross-fire setup would need even more.

You're forgetting the biggest power hogs in your computer! The CPU and the graphics card.
