i've already tried a bunch of downloads from java .com and sun microsystems.com. i have win 98. somebody help me, please!!!!

I had the same issue. It took me a few trys to figure out what was going on.
What was happining was I thought java was done downloading, and it was not. The process took longer then expected.. First go here
http://www.java.com/en/download/index.jsp
That is the only version of java you will need.
Make sure you wait untill it tells you that its done... (just because you see the picture in the place where the movie is supposed to be does not mean its done downloading. .. Just keep waiting.. It will finish, you will see it installing. and it will tell you to shut down your browser and restart it. (not the pc, just the browser).. everything should work for you after that.

Sometimes, the install gets interrupted, and when you try to install it again, for some reason it won't let you. Maybe there are system files that can't be copied. Anyway, I had the same problem when i had a half-installed version of Java. Try to empty your /temp directory. Also, try to uninstall it, using a 3rd party uninstall program.

first make sure your using the latest version of ie or mozill aand let it try to download the plugin then try downloading from sun
