Exerciseeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. That is the number 1 key! Watch your diet...if the baby gets over 8 pounds then you have a much greater chance of CS. On the other hand, I knew I was having a CS so I got to pick the babies birthdate and it was over in just a couple of hours. My boys were 7.5 pounds and 9.1 pounds.
Good luck!

Hire a good midwife and have a homebirth ; )
This might not be a choice you would make, but having a care provider that views your pregnancy as a natural, normal event rather than a pathology to be "treated" is a great beginning. Some other ideas: Eat really well; walk walk walk to get the baby's head engaged with your cervix; envision a normal, healthy birth; only listen to/read positive birth stories; research all routine interventions like epidurals, pitocin, etc. before going ahead with them (one intervention can lead to another...); don't give birth on your back (cuts down the pelvic opening 20-30%); take a great birthing class (Bradley method is good); hire a GOOD doula who will be there to coach you through the tough bits; stay at home to labor as long as possible before arriving at the hospital; Most importantly, educate yourself--"Thinking Woman's Guide to a Better Birth" by H. Goer and "Birthing From Within" by P. England are two good books to start with.
Sometimes c/s are unavoidable and lifesaving, but the hideous c/s rate at most US hospitals could be cut down considerably if we could view labor and birth as a natural process that does not need so much management.
Have a great pregnancy and birth!

I just had my son 2 weeks ago. It never came to my mind that i would have a c-section. 2 weeks before my due date at my appointment we found ou that the baby was breech. I had a choice of c-section or trying to give natural birth. I went with the c-section because it was safer for the baby. while they were performing the CS the doctor said it was good that I went with the CS because the umbillical cord was around his neck twice. If i had choose natural birth thry would have to do an emergency CS. Sometimes no matter what you do you have to get a c-section. There is some stuff i like better with a c-section.

Stay healthy... a lot of walking (especially toward the end)... Take birthing classes... There are some natural ways to help at the end (having sex because there are prostoglandins in semen) ... buy a birthing ball & sit on that to help baby engage properly... when in labor try to walk & stay mobile as long as possible. Gravity works FOR you, when you have an epidural you are "bed bound" therefore you don't have the advantage of gravity. BEST OF LUCK!

there is no way to avoid a c-section i had my baby on july 15 2006 and we thought i was going to have a normal delivery but when the doctor came in to deliver he had me pushing to get me to dilate the full 10 centimeters cause i was only at 9 and a half for ever so he came in when he put his hand in me to help it along he foind out the baby's head was the wrong way it was up and he said its safer if its down so he tryed to turn the baby himself but when he got it turned the baby's head would go right back up the doctor couldnt let it go cause it would flip up so we keep trying and the we found out that the baby was to far up he was at the top of my stomach instead of down by my opening so ther ewas no way to fix that probablem i had to have a c-section it was not that bad but trust me make sure you have someone to help you 24/7 with the baby if you have a c-section and you will feel like you will never get better but you will it took me 3 weeks to get up off the couch with out hollering and someone having there hand out to help me good luck

WALK REGULARLY. You need to be sure your abdominal muscles are strong enough for the push.
But then, there are instances when a c-section is unavoidable.
1) your hips are just too narrow
2) breach birth and they can't turn the baby
3) the umbilical cord is wrap around the baby's neck and the baby won't survive a natural birthing.

That may be a lost cause.
My wife did everything right, but my son rotated and broke the water as a footling breech. No option at that point
