The dash unit by law is required to default to DEF if there is a failure with the controls. If your front is warm and your rear is cold, I think that the control head has failed. It could be merely a vacuum connection, or the control unit itself.
It is probably going to take someone familiar with the control unit's function to repair it for you.
You might ask the dealer if there is a TSB (technical service bulletin) regarding this failure, or perhaps a silent recall.

the system could be low on charge, but what it sounds like to me is that the orifice for the front A/C unit is plugged. These are not a job for the home mechanic, so take it in to competent mechanic. I've owned a Villager and they are great vans, but can be temperamental when they have front and rear A/C. If the system needed a recharge, both the front and rear would blow hot air. Hope this helps.

No recalls on the Villager for A/C problems. You could have a blend door or blend door actuator problem in the front A/C housing. I have also seen many A/C control head problems out of the Villager. A better diagnosis is needed from a reputable repair shop, especially to check whether or not the blend door is working properly.

Turn the blower fan to the lowest setting, and listen for a hissing sound in and around the dash area. Find that hissing and you will find a vacuum hose off or split. Also, look around under the hood on the passenger side of the vehicle for any hoses that might look bad, cracked, split where they plug on, and listen for the hissing sound. Also, above is an answer from "ironhand" and I would say he knows what he is talking about! If you combine what he is saying with what I'm saying, you will be able to decide. Good Luck!

sounds like a refrigerant flow control prob in the front half of system- van has 2 evaporators, 2 blower systems,2 control panels, ect. the only parts they share are the ones under the hood(compressor assy, condensor, ocmpressor lines, ect.. guage readings can help here. if system goes into a vaccum at 1500-3000 rpm could be a blockage in that part of the system-expansion valves, orifice tubes ect. if you are unfamiliar with a/c system repair/diag,take it to someone who knows-otherwise you can damage system in van,MYecosystem,or worse-youcan get seriously HURT--- bad for you, not for me. still would suck though, huh? remembr that both halves share refrigerant--if rear is frosty cold, probably not a charge issue(however it possibly still could be, remote chance).. be safe and smart.....

Check the cooling line and the filter of front a/c, it is probably blocked by dirt or dust or the fan motor is not working.
