ESPN's "Outside the Lines" just did a story on the $14.98 Starbury basketball shoe on Sunday 8/27. In the story, Marbury claims that the shoe has the same "technology" as Jordan's or Lebron's shoes... without QUITE so much markup.
It's totally possible that it does... You gotta figure that it costs less than $5.00 to make a pair of those shoes, and the rest of the $180 price tag is just marketing.
They also showed a guy who used to work at (I think) Nike, and he came over to Starbury's company...I don't remember what they said his job was at Nike, but it did lend a bit of credibility to the story.
Of course, Nike, Rebok etc, refused to be interviewed for the story.
It seemed that the shoe is already out...they did show people mobbing a store to get a pair (or two, or three, or seven). But maybe it'll be available at all Steve and Barry's next month, I'm not sure. But I haven't been following this at all, so I would take the previous post's word for it that it'll be out next month (besides, next month is almost here, so it won't be long before anyone can get them).
I hope the shoe is a success...chances are, not too many kids are going to be killed on the street for a $14.98 pair of shoes.
I thought it was funny that, regarding a $180 pair of sneakers, we never heard anything like the complaining we've heard about gas prices... but talk about gouging... there is no such thing as a pair of sneakers that's worth $180.
