When I see a painting or drawing, hear a song, taste a dish, smell a perfume, or touch something, and that experience takes my breath away, THAT is art. Art is the height of achievement, the best a person can do. Throwing bags of garbage on the floor in interesting designs is NOT art. Art has a sense of reverence to it, the feeling that the artist was somehow enraptured by his creation. When you can glimpse the divine essence of a person in his or her creation, that is art.

It is something that is beautiful, inspiring, breathetaking. Things like a beautiful painting (Monet is my fave), or a piece of glass, a sunset, a ballet, my children, the grass glistening with dew.
It is hard to define exactly, because so many things I see on a daily basis to me is art.
The afghan I just finished, the mixed media collage I am working on, or the quilted bag I made 2 weeks ago. Those are all works of art to me. But so is the smile I get from one of my boys when I do something silly.

It tells a story.
Makes a statement.
Stirs the emotions.
Traditional.
Abstract.
Unique.
Captures the eye of the beholder.
Art is poetry in it's many forms.

Art like beauty is in the eye of the beholder, however great art should stir some emotion. A painting of a bowl of fruit is nice but does it get your blood boiling and percolate through your soul.

Art is an expression of the artist. I think everyone is an artist and we all have a different medium. Some people use paint, others fabric, for some it's food. It's the medium we use to express ourselves to the world.
