A couple of months ago I ran out of black ink but I still had very little color ink. When I changed the black ink it then said I was out of colored ink. at the time I didn't have the money to replace it and I really didn't need to use it. So the new ink cartridge stayed in the printer used until today when I replaced the colored ink. Now there is a problem with the black cartridge. Did it sit too long or is it something eles? I need my printer

If the cartridge sat unused in the printer for a couple of months, then it probably got dried out. The nozzles are clogged with dried ink so that is why it isn't working correctly. Running the cleaning utilities might help, but if they don't work then you can try soaking the cartridge.

Put the copper portion in a tiny bit of wam water until you see ink coming out. Then dry the cartridge off, put it in the printer and run the cleaning utilties once more.

It's possible that the cartridge is somewhat clogged. Use the software program that came with the printer to do a thorough cleaning of the printer's cartridges and see if that helps. Good luck.
