to pay the multimillion dollar salary's of all the executives. it's a racket all right!
If you donate the money to the Mormon Church instead with instructions on how you want it spent then 100% of the money will be spent that way and the church pays it's operating costs with church members tithes.

From personal experience; When my son was 9 he needed surgery. We had no medical insurance at that time but my husband had a good job and we could have made payments on the procedure. This was an important surgery, he had a hernia which could have ruptured at any moment and killed him. We were sent to a hospital which was part of United Way's network. We talked to the financial administrator who told us we had to come up with half the money for the surgery before they would even consider it, roughly $2,500. Trying to explain that my son's life was in danger and we could make payments made no difference. We were told to wait until it ruptured then bring him to the emergency room--a 30 minute drive--and they would "have" to take him. I asked what if he dies before then? The man shrugged his shoulders. United Way will NEVER get a penny of my money and I advise everyone else to find a TRUE charity instead of them to donate to.

What a good question! It is one great reason why everyone should research a cause asking for donations before giving. This is ridiculous and I made a decision long ago that organizations that keep most of the money for themselves are on my list of DO NOT DONATE!

Thats the same with any organization, not just the United Way!
Your best bet is to just give your money to every tom dikenharry on every street corner. If you want 100% of your dollar to go to a lost cause.

The executives at United Way are nothing but crooks and they pocket a large portion of the donations.

Don't blame the United Way, they're just holding their hat out. Blame the donors for being irresponsible with their charitable spending.

That is horrible.
But it makes sense. I mean, when you say United Way, everyone knows what you are talking about. Why? Advertising and big names(think of all the athletes they have in their commercials. how much you think they charge?). All that costs money...our money.
What a crock.

Overhead possibly? Do you have a source for the information in your question? Could you post it please? It is not that I doubt it but I want to see for myself. If it is that low I may donate elsewhere.

the percents are probably off, but they blow money like mad on themselves. i've worked with big nonprofits and have seen the conferences at expensive resorts, the big salaries, the cushy offices (for even low-level help). i'll never throw money away on them again.
