What was rome called? A Country? A Civilization? Back in the really really old days!

From Roman writings, we know that the people at the time [say, about 150 BD to about 350 AD] referred to it just as "Roma." The Rman Senate issued orders in the name of the "Senate and the Roman People" - you see the initials SPQR in the documents - that is for Senatus et Populus Quorum Romanum ["Senate and the Roman People"].

While we call Rome an Empire, it depended where you were. In the rest of Italy and in Gaul, you were technically in the city-state of Rome itself. Other nations were just closely allied or were under Rome's ultimate jurisdiction [Greece and Syria], and some were closely allied but eventually Roman provinces [Palestina].

Roman Empire but it wasn't limited to the city we call Rome it spread all over Europe into the middle east.

I believe Rome was considered an empire. Because I remember the reign of the Roman Empire. If it wasn't empire then it would be civlization! Hope this helps you out!

It's a city in Italy.
There's no such thing as Rome Empire. There's only a Roman Empire.

rome was a city in the roman empire, like capital where the forum was and the emperor was living; it was surrounded by thick city walls, like a fortress. there the civitas was living.
