You know the song, "There was a farmer had a dog and Bingo was his name-o" but it is unclear whether it is the dog's name that is Bingo or the farmer's.

One of the nice things about turning 50 this year is that I'm so old, I remember when things like this got started and therefore know which one it is.

It's the dog's name. The second and third verses make it clear, as the farmer is clapping to call the dog.

Isn't it nice to know that there's a purpose to growing old?

Hey good point. Well, Its starts by saying "there was a farmer who had a dog". Ok so we are talking about the farmer. And the farmer had a dog. But still we are talking about this certain farmer who had this dog, but the subject is the farmer.

So Bingo is the farmer!!! LOL

The song: BINGO originates from obscure origins.
It does not clearly state, whether Bingo is the name of the dog, or whether it is the name of the farmer, or perhaps, both. (*That could show some form of relationship, between man and beast, or at least ownership).

That is the whole 'puzzle' about the song, you'll never know!

If the Farmer's name was Bingo, the lyrics would be "There was a farmer and bingo was his name and he had a dog...." in fact, they wouldn't have to mention the dog: "There was a farmer had a farm, and bingo was his name."....Must be the farmer.

Everyone claims it is the name of the dog, but the song starts off referring to the farmer, so id bet its his name. and 5 gold stars to his parents for naming their son or daughter bingo!

Bingo is the name of a highly addictive gambling game that requires a room full of seniors, a series of boards with random numbers organized into five columns, and a high shouting voice. Whoever completes a row, column, or diagonal first must clearly yell out, BINGO!

Just kidding. Bingo's the dog, of course. I like being stupid like that!

This is truly one of life's mysteries like the chicken and the egg. I have searched my entire life for the answer to this timeless question. "Is Bingo the name of the farmer or the dog?" The answer has haunted and eluded me since the 1st grade when I learned the song.

My quest has taken me to the highest places of the icy Himalayan mountains. I have sat at the feet of holy men from India, Tibet, and Nepal. I have lived with the JuJu men of dark Africa to learn their secrets. I have endured hunger, torture, violence and imprisonment for the answer. The mysterious and powerful Witch Doctors of the Brazilian rain forest don't know. They sit in drug-induced trances, contemplating it.
I myself, have fasted sleepless days and nights, prayed & meditated, and sought the face of God with tears and violent weeping to know this simple thing. The world's top physicists and universities are dumbfounded and cannot explain.

These eternal mysteries still remain...

Is Bingo the name of the farmer or the dog?
Which came first, the chicken or the egg?
How can you have any pudding if you don't eat your meat?

Please!

Why did you even remind me?

My life is incomplete.

Well, If you assume the sentance structure is correct, it must be the dog. Because if it was the name of the farmer, 'and bingo was his name-o' would be a dangling participle.
