Well, I've got some great rules for garage sales.
1. Don't sell to early-birds at any price. And they don't get to cling.
2. At 10:00 a.m. the price of everything goes down to 25 cents.
3. At 11:00 a.m. everything is free, but if you take something, we get to give you something else and you have to take that, too.
4. At Noon, everything is free, but you have to take it all.
You'd be surprised how little difference there is in revenue, and clean-up and haul off is reduced to nothing. I've done ths a few times, and have encouraged others who've done it, too.
It's great!

Depends what is free.I always tell my kids not accept things from strangers like food or drinks..but like a closed soda or something that is cool..I really wouldnt waste time...doing it because your actually losing profit..I think the best thing to do when running a yard sale..is smile and be nice..a smile can always make someones day better..Also, making sure your stuff is organized with prices..I know it is hard to go to a yard sale when stuff is not priced some people would just like to deal with asking and stuff and keep walking.

Giving something free to a yard shopper is an act of appreciation for the shopper taking the time to shop at your yard sale. It isn't required okay? Its up to the seller to do that. As both shopper and seller - I appreciate it when sellers give me something in addition for free and as a seller, I only do it when I see the buyer is really appreciative of the items they bought. Normally, I set aside stuff I know I can give away for free. It could be trinkets, a mug, a unique coffee cup, a paper weight, a cute hair clip.

I have been to plenty of yard sales, and they gave my kid a free toy, she didn't ask for it, but kept staring at it, so the woman asked if she wanted it, and she said yes, and yes it did make mine, and my little girl day brighter, cause there are still people out there that actually cares about others feelings.

I went to a garage sale last week. An older woman gave my 8 month old son a bunch of stuffed animals and movies. She said he was so precious and she wanted him to have them. I don;t know that it made my day, but it made me smile for the moment. Little gestures like that are reminders that there are still genuinely kind people in this world.

Yes. I brought my two year old with me and I was buying a child-gate and he sat down at a little table. The woman charged me half the price for the gate, gave me a second gate free and then told me take the little table set. I think I got it all for $1.50. I think she did that because of my son. She kept gushing about how cute he was. My husband was made because we were running out of room and I just brought home this stuff. When he found out what it cost, he thought it was pretty good.

Some old man gave my daughter a little wooden doll and gave me a bowl that I had admired, it was a very touching thing.
Here's something for your book!!
There was another old man who had yard sales all the time in his empty house next door to the house he lived in. When he would get a (I guess you would say "dumb" acting) woman in her 20s or 30s in there by herself, he would sneak up behind her and put his arms around her and grab her chest!! He did it all the time, and he was so old, and so little and feeble, that the women would laugh or just say "get away you pervert" He did that to my sister in law, and she was so mad she told her husband, and when he went over there and saw him, he just laughed! I still see that old man around town and he still has that twinkle in his beady little eyes.

I can say that I have seen free cookies or lemonade at garage sales...
I'm in marketing and there are studies that prove that if someone is fed, they are more likely to buy...
