Ok...
There are two types of prep.
Oldschool prep: "prep" comes from the term of prepratory school. High end private schools.. Prep in this way is collar shirts, button downs, polos, pink and green, Ralph Lauren, Lacoste, etc.

New Prep: Hollister, Abercrombie, AE, etc. These things are preppy in a clean way, but are truely more laid back California Surf style.

Old Navy... hmm... Old Navy is more just laid back. Its more mountainy then preppy. Old Navy is still ok though. Mostly because the clothes are more expensive at Hollister, etc. its thought of as better quality. I've also found Old Navy's fabric is a little cheaper.
Hope I could Help!♥

As a preppy purist, I would say that neither AE or Old Navy is the epitomy of preppy- they're both too funky, and preppy is classic.
However, AE is definitely more preppy than Old Navy. It's partly the way they represent themselves, and partly because their clothes are geared primarily for the teenage set. Old Navy carries clothing for all ages and many styles. They are certainly not the same, although they do overlap somewhat.

I hate AE
I think it's just as bad as old navy
And I'm pretty sure AE is just as cheap as old navy
Maybe even cheaper.
And it's so not $50 a polo
More like $24 for a regular priced one
Most of their stuff go on sale anyway
So you could probably get one on sale for $10-$20
& if preppy=rich/expensive then why not go for A&F?
A&F is more like $50 a polo. Well for Hawaii anyways.
It's supposed to be like $40 in the mainland or something.

preppy is like abercrombie and fitch and american eagle and similar stores.

its all in the name.

old navy is cheaper and not as high quality as a&f. and id say a&e is between both. cuz its price range is more than old navy and less than a&f. and their styles are totally different then old navy.

i practically own just bout everything in our a&e and im starting to own a&f. me i just like the styles and the price isnt that bad. and i ges that popularity just comes with it.

because old navy comes in sizes for people who don't look like toothpicks and because the old navy clothes are cheaper to buy and of inferior quality (don't ever machine wash an old navy shirt... unless you want to give it to your baby cousin!)

It's brand name loyalty.

AE polo: $50
ON polo: $20

It costs more. That's why Gucci and stuff are stylish. Money defines rank.
