Bad main seal is easy - you'll see the oil coming out the back of the engine. It gets everything back there covered.
Bad rod bearings will show up as a knock down low in the engine, and it may come and go. But lots of things can cause a knock. You'll probably need to take it to a trusted mechanic...

Bad con-rod bearings will give a definite sound, a metal on metal tapping sound. It gets louder and louder real quick, like days, not weeks.
Blown main seal on any engine will result in oil leaking out of the back of the pan.

If you find that you cannot rotate your rod in a full 360 without it binding, then you may need new rod bearings. I once wore out my rod bearings in a hammock with my ex-girlfriend. If you find that you have a white cloudy liquid around your mouth and on your face then you have probably recently blown a seal. A large seal probably.

bad rod bearings will announce themselves with a light quick tapping noise that changes speed with the engine rpms. if you change them out quickly after you hear them, sometimes you dont have to replace the crank. if you are good, you can drop the oil pan and replace the rod bearings without pulling the motor out. a main seal will greet you with large amounts of oil leaking between the engine and transmission for a rear main seal.

If you are not planning on taking the motor apart. listen for a mild knock that increases with RPM's Also drops in oil pressure can indicate a bad bearing.
Rear Main seals generally leave a nice slick of oil under the car.
Both are common for SB Chevy's
