Though, I think art is created from inside feelings and thought, I also think people create it to express an idea about life, and it's nice when others appreciate that view or at least acknowledge it's existence or preferably truth.
Besides, if no one appreciates it (even over time), does it qualify as art?
I don't think wide recognition is imperative, but I think some is.

I guess there are people who think it is important to be recognized for their talents while others who have equal talent or more could care less whether they achieve success or not. People are conditioned from childhood to think that everything they do deserve accolades of attention. It's the hoopla of babies first step and all the stars for every little thing done in kindergarten to all the kudos given throughout the corporate world. Humans are so ego oriented that without recognition they become attention starved. It's really pathetic when you take a deeper look at it.

Recognition is useful, for commercial purposes, but not otherwise. Being satisfied with what you've done is of primary importance.
