what is the exact width in pixels so my div overlay in myspace would be right in the middle?

You can center your div overlay via your CSS, and use percentages instead of pixels.

Not sure what div overlay is but I resize my background image to 1280x1024. That size takes up the whole screen.

Don't think in terms of pixels. What will be "right" for somebody using a 600x500 window because they have an 800x600 display on their system won't be right on mine, because my Firefox window is 1325x1155. And then there's issues like "number of toolbars" and so on...
