I'm less than 20 miles from the gulf coast and i'll leave with no questions asked. Hurricanes are nothing to be played with and Katrina reminded the world of that. But I hate to hear people put down the president and the govt when even though it took time they did come through for the people. With all the communications down if you look at it right they did what they could. Within 2 weeks time there was help everywhere. But I doubt if anywhere you could really be prepared for something so devastating as a storm that size. I go down the road now and you still see remnants of Katrina everywhere

We buy alot of beer and gather for a hurricane party. what else are you suppose to do? you can't stop what the elements are going to destroy. you can put boards up on the windows but what is that going to help if those same winds, and water tears down block, brick, old yellow pine. that is just to make you feel secure. you kind of have to look at the big picture.and if you are going to leave leave a few days early. otherwise you might be stuck in a traffic jam when the tornado's hit before the hurricane. And remember folks Katrina was a level 3 i believe. ouch at a 3. imagine a 5 like Andrew on the la state. ain't no boarding going to help that. look at what a 3 did. advise get the hell out .

basically having the local media scareing everyone :-)
Basically the people are old hats at it on the gulf and until people know for sure, we are just monitoring it... when there is an idea, they will start boarding like before but now they are telling people to be ready to evacuate the FEMA trailers as they can't handle more than about 50 mph winds.. so if Ernesto hits basically anywheres in the Central gulf, look for a lot of displaced New Orleanians on their own for a few days....
Basically the levees are back to pre-Katrina levels.. but not at the Katrina type storms.. so they are watching for flooding...

Governer Bush has declared a state of emergency in FL. People in the Keys are stocking up on items at Lowes and Home Depot just in case.

Nope. I'm not too worried. We've evacuated before. Nothing new. If it gets close and is strong, we'll leave. If it's just a tropical storm, no biggie. We've stayed through them before, we'll do it again!
I live on the coast of Texas, near Louisiana.

Well, Mayor Ray Nagin and Governor Kathleen Blanco are already yelling for MORE MONEY. That's all they care about.
Read the "Recall Kathleen Blanco" petition on Yahoo.

Well, we really won't know the intensity till thursday. Hopefully, it won't be as bad as Katrina. I know this is talking ahead of time...but i doubt it will be as strong.
Katrina was pretty bad..we were without power and water..or phones for awhile. I hope we won't have to go through that again

Since I lived there for 6 years I can tell you at this point most are doing nothing. The are the ones who shouldn't get assistance. But if they need it they will be the first ones looking for government handouts. Lazy, helpless, dumb Americans. All other Americans, excellent job! Do not rely on the government for help. They should not be responsible for your lack of preparation. They didn't build your house on the beach.
