6*3*2 = 36
It's actually not a combination. It's an application of the Counting Principle.

This is tough.... what is the color and pattern of the shirts, and the colors of the shoes? You have to make everything match. Also, with 6 pairs of jeans, a few will probably be so close to identical that you can't really say they create different outfits.

Also, 3 PAIRS of shirts means 6 shirts, so mathematically

6*6*2=72 POSSIBLE (easy to overlook that!!!).

(unless in each pair the shirts are identical, in which case you have only three shirts to chose from)

gonpatrick got the right answer--36, but incorrectly says it is permutations. Permutations aren't really the same as combinations.

Combinations implies that things are independent, permutations implies that there is a dependence. One decision impacts the future choices you have.

If you're putting things in order, for instance, if you pick something to be first, you can't pick it to be the fourth item too, so what you have is a permutation. Same typically works for cards...if you deal a player a card, you can't deal him the same card in the same hand. If you were looking at poker hands you'd be worried about permutations.

Can I wear a shirt & jeans, but no shoes? Can I wear jeans & shoes, but no shirt? If so, the number of outfits increase.
