well, if u have the expansion open for bussiness, u can use a cheat called forcetwins. There can also be hacks on modthesims2.com also, i heard eating spagetti increases your chance of pregnancy. Not sure though... Have to try out

So far as I know, without using a hack or a cheat, there is not way in game to increase your chances unless the Sim is a twin themself. As for the 1 boy and 1 girl, I'm not sure if its possible. I've only had same sex twins. Though you never know. I haven't been able to play in some time. Good luck on finding out, and if you find out you can have one of each, would you please send me a message telling me? That would be a nice thing to know.

You can't increase your chances (for twins) without a hack (or the tweak that comes with one of the expansions mentioned)
However, selecting the sex of your baby just doesn't happen.
This is what I do in my game...
I save the game as it gets closer to the time that mum is gonna have the baby. SAVE it to within minutes of when before the sims is due to give birth. Then watch the birthing.
If the baby is the not the one you want, then don't save the game, exit to the neighborhood and come back to your lot. Then relive the birthing.
It'll be kind of "Groundhog Day" for ya as you wait for the perfect baby. When you do get the perfect kid, then exit to the neighborhood by saving.
If you download the twins only hack, do remember that if you get tired of it you'll have to remember where you put it, in order to remove it. :)

this cheat will give you twins, but not necessarily one boy and one girl
it also seems that sims who are twins have a tendency to have twins more often

Drink 2 cups of pickle juice just before you "do it". For 2 boys--Dill, For 2 Girls--Sweet, For 1 boy and 1 girl--one cup of Dill and one cup of Sweet. That's a sure receipe for twins.

Nothing, it is usually when you don't want twins that you get them lol. I have only ever had single babies and my couple were hard pressed to look after that one.
