The aquarium is 100 gallon with a chiller that has sent my electric bill through the roof.

You have a 100 gallon saltwater tank with fish and don't know what temp to keep them at?!?!?!? How long have you had this tank?

You need to do online research for each type of fish AND coral so you can determine the temps.

I have never kept marine fish personally, but when I worked in a retail fish store, we kept the tanks at or about 72-74 degrees.

It really depends on the type of saltwater fish. I keep a few tangs, a trigger, a clown fish, a few damsels, a blenny, & a few anemone at around 76 degrees. Actually have tried to keep it cooler but its on the second floor of my house which is warmer than the lower floor. I havent had any problems with them dying from the heat either. I actually turned the tank up to 80 degrees to treat ick (in combo with some maracyn) for a few days, & all was well.

My advice is--get rid of the chiller. Unless you are keeping some fancy goldfish, your salt water tank should be ok.

Good luck to you!

My salt water tanks sits at 80 without any problems. Try raising your lights so that there is more air circulation between them and the water. You could also set a small fan to blow across the water to help cool it, but you would have to replace evaporated water daily.

its not necessarily how high the temp gets but how fast it gets there i keep all my reef tanks at 78-80 but i have had heater malfunctions and seen one of my tanks get up to 85 and noone died from it, but i wouldnt trust it even that high for long, any spike over 88 can start to damage your coral tissues and bacterial bed. as far as fish youd be suprised what an old fish can handle.

You shouldn't let it get into the 80's.
