I am black. I listen to all kinds of music. When I was growing up my father played blues and jazz and some country. My mother loved Henry Mancini, Andy Williams, Harry Belafonte. As I got older I was exposed to R&B. I love it. Now there's rap and hip-hop and I like some of that too. My kids totally cracked up when they heard me rapping along with Tupac to "Picture Me Rolling." I've listened to some rock that I like. I like Damien Rice. I like Coldplay. I I love Erikah Badu and Angie Stone. I like Narles Barkley. I like Sheryl Crowe. I love Winton Marsalis and John Coltrane. I also love some classical and opera. I love Leontyne Price and Luciano Pavarotti. Damn, I even like Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton. The point is I don't limit myself. Why in the hell should I? Because some narrow-minded idiot thinks that if I listen to music not necessarily associated with my race there's something wrong with me? I say there's something wrong with THEM. Nobody's gonna stop me from listening to whatever music I want to listen to.
I think that people should listen to whatever music resonates with them. To limit yourself to a certain musical genre based on race is ridiculous. If you worry about what other people think and then base how you live your life on what they think is it really your life?

Of course it's ok. These race stereotypes are just stupid, and very unhelpful.
Some of the best rock music has been recorded by black people over time, from Chuck Berry to modern day band TV on The Radio. By the same token, so awesome hip hop is being recorded by white people such as Buck 65 & The Herd.
It's stupid to try and categorise a race with a certain style of music. So listen to whatever you like, and ignore those that say otherwise.

This is a fun question.
I do understand the desire to 'support' certain kinds of things. Like people at church might go to a restaurant owned by a fellow church member. So, certainly a black community might want to support what is considered black music and might even feel slightly proprietary about it.
Music is just too universal and fundamental to keep contained.
All people embrace good music. Here in America we embrace all kinds of music, be it hip hop or pop, reggae or celtic.
Jazz music would have been considered 'black music' when it first came out of new orleans and drifted up to St. Louis. But, today, anyone can play jazz ... and, so, anyone can listen to r&b.

Yes, it is you're free to listen to whatever you like. In fact as far as rap goes the main consumer group it's aimed at is middle class white youth as they spend far more on rap media than the black community. This has been reflected in rap through the arrival of Eminem, the popularity of Cypress Hill (white boys love toker rap), and the Streets in the UK. Meanwhile artists like Hendrix, Lenny Kravitz, the Jacksons, and so on create good rock/pop, they must have had the liking for the music from somewhere. Remember even Ice-T went rock with Bodycount. If you look at it a lot of what is teen pop these days is just rehashed Motown-like tunes.
Boxing yourself in because of peer pressure based on colour is just as racist as if a white person had insulted you. Look at Mr. O'Shea Jackson, with NWA he said fight against the oppressive white man (if you feel that way) but he never said oppress yourselves while doing it.

Never had that problem...but I was the white girl black people I knew said was "alright" and the white people mostly looked at me like "What up wit dat?"
No, I don't speak that way....
I honestly think there's more than hip hop and pop in the world, and if people can't see that then that's whack. It's essentially all the same music, just different rhythms...different singers...different marketing...that's all. Listen to whatever you like.

I think it's more of how they do the sterotypical thing while listening to the music that throws people off... I mean I look small town hick but listen to pop, rock and country... but people don't look at me too much.. now if I dressed like I came off BET, no matter what music I like, I think I'd have the headaches..... It's more a thing of the way you act than music I think usually

Yes its okay for black, white, yellow, and or green to listen to anything he or she wants too. The black ppl that say you are white wash, and the white ppl say u wanna be black are usually the ones that are racially discriminating. Be yourself and listen to what makes you happy, not what everyone else says.
