I'll suggest you try AVG Free Edition

http://free.grisoft.com/doc/1

Commercial ones like Norton and McAffee sucks up too much system resources....

The rest of the time it's up to you.... the way you do things.... that's how not to get viruses.... Not even the best anti virus can prevent that if you have bad habits....

I'd suggest that you pick up either McAfee Virus protection, or Norton System Doctor. As well as Spy Sweeper for spyware protection.

AVG has a good personal use Anti-Virus product available at: http://free.grisoft.com

Avast Antivirus, also for non-commercial use is available at: http://www.avast.com/eng/avast_4_home.html

Avira AntiVir Personal Edition is also available for download at http://www.free-av.com , I have not used this a lot and would welcome other comments on it.

The above products include active background scanning modules!

Bitdefender has an excellent scanner and removal tool but does not have any active background protection in the free version that is available at: http://www.bitdefender.com/site/Main/view/Download-Free-Products.html

Do you insure your car with 'free' car insurance?

Do you use 'free' doorlocks on your house and business?

That said, many ISPs offer free virus and spam downloads to their customers. Checvk with them. And be very wary of anything you download for 'free'.
