I keep hearing that the sky turns a sickening color green before a tornado hits. Is there an explanation for this? Having never seen or been in the path of a tornado, I am curious to know.

The sky turns green when there is hail in the thunderstorm. It does not always do that with a tornado. I have seen several tornadoes myself and only a couple had greenish clouds. The rest were just dark and ominous. Seeing a tornado live: PRICELESS

There is no sickening color, there might be a green tint to the sky caused by the refraction of light off of hail which is common in the the large storms that can spawn tornadoes. Green is not always an indication of a tornado, it just means that there is probably some large hail in the storm and you should seek shelter and protect the windshield on your car.

There's no hail in a tornado.

Tornadoes are spawned by very strong thunderstorms. If a thunderstorm is strong enough to be producing a tornado, it is more than strong enough to be producing hail.

The green sky thing that you've heard of is about hail, not tornadoes. And the green sky thing doesn't happen all the time with hail.

There's hail in tornados; the light comes from the reflected sunlight filtered though that.

You don't always see that color green before a tornado, but it is true in most cases. You do see that same color in clouds that bear a hailstorm, with or without a funnel cloud.
