Are you able to SEND emails and IM's? you just can't receive them? If that's the case, then you might have your anti-spyware/firewall settings too high. Your computer is rejecting everything, including harmless stuff. If that is the case, try lowering your security settings (don't disable them, just lower them a "notch").
If you can't receive OR send emails/IM's, but your internet is working OK otherwise, try uninstalling, then re-installing, your IM client. If THAT doesn't help, you probably have some sort of virus, or a physical error on your hard disk. In either of those cases, take your computer to a specialist.
