the poor isuzu 2WD 4cyl i have is dead at 70.000 miles but still the body is like new, i plan to install front and rear 1985 toyota axles and leaf springs ,the trans and transfur case as well, for a power plant i have a 1975 MERCEDES inline 4cyl diesel, w/ custom fab bell housing from 3/4 aluminum plate to mount the toyota trans, the tires are 38's on alcoa rim's, all parts to be powder coated or s-steel, i want to build a very strong and clean mercedes 4x4 unlike anyone else has,, my QUESTION is if i use a gear set of -513 should that be low enough to help out the 67 HP diesel 4cyl mercedes engine and still get a little fuel mileage, my final gearing is key to make this work correctly,i can fab most anything, but need advice from a 4x4 guy on my gear choice, thanks for any help on this, oh about the mercedes motor choice' simple this engine will last longer than any other possibly could.

Stick to your guns I still think the 300sd turbo diesel would even look good under hood But if 4 cyl it is! Make sure your Manual transmission! has 1.2 to one overdrive and 5.12 axles won't seem as low ounce you get er wound up. I just don't think that engine spinning a automatic will do anything but slow. Oh by the way do you realise what a bosch injector pump costs glow plugs? pre combustion chamber replacement in Mercedes Benz engine run a compression test to know where that engine is

You are going to need to fab engine mounts too. Both left and right and a support for the trans. The conversion you are attempting is a pretty rare one and I doubt if any kits are available to do this. There are speciatie shops that make popular conversion kits that might be avaiable for your car. 5.13 gears are pretty low, but your tires are pretty big, so it might work-out. What I would suggest is to figure out the old ratio that was in the car before (revolutions per turn of the axle vs turn of the tire) and use that as a starting point. If you had 30" tires before and a 3.70 axle use that to compare to you 5.13 gears with 38" tires. There is no simple answer to your question. You will have to do some math to get the answer you seek.
I also hope you don't live in a state with smog laws. This conversion might have some adverse registration issues.
Good luck!

If you want a real diesel engine get you a CAT 3216B truck engine 365 HP 610 ftlbs. torque all under 2400 RPM A 513 gear is really low do you realize that at 30 MPH your motor will be redlined.

I can't help you on gear ratios but I question your choice of engines. A Toyota 4 cyl has 100+ hp and will get just as good or better mileage as a 70hp diesel with 513 gears. The Toyota engine will also last longer than we will. (?)
