Peak oil, as far as this question is concerned is when the price of fuel costs more than you can afford and it drives up the cost of food and everything else with the possibility of a colapse of the dollar and a long term depression.

This is called hyper - inflation. When all goods and services break down and break goes for 100 bucks a loaf. Usually co insides with massive un employment at the same time.

First its not the oil companies objective to do this. No there idea is to drive up markets. Create an atmosphere where we will ask, ok what will help lower prices? The responce is I (big oil) want to be able to drill in Alaska and Yosemitee, all over the east coast and in your backyard if I need to, without any complaints.

They will still only have 8 oil refineries in the United States. Right after we pass all these laws to give in to the oil companies. OPEC will lower thier prices and crush our nation oil economy again.

I don't believe in the doomsday version of how "peak oil" will pan out. It reminds me a lot of the Y2K bug scare tactics.

However, my family do try to cut down the usage of oil in our home. We downsized our only car from a 6 cylinder to a 4 cylinder earlier this year. My husband drives this to work and I ride a bicycle to work. We walk to the shops for most of our small grocery purchases (larger items we need to drive as the stores aren't close enough to home).

I don't think we're anywhere near this as of yet. Adjusted for inflation, this energy crisis and unemployment isn't nearly as bad as the crisis of the 1980's, and we got through that fine.
