I took a better paying job but I am now losing my medicad because I make too much money. My son's wheel chair alone costs anywhere from 22-25 thousand dollars, on top of the numerous operations he will be having in the near future. Social Security pays $400.00 a month for a cargiver to come in and help me with my son. My new health insurance will not cover him because it is a pre-existing condition. I am caught between a rock and a hard place. Does anyone know what I can do to care for my son without drowning in my financially?

depending on what state you live in....call your local health department and inquire about BCMH programs. (Bureau for Children with Medical Handicaps) It a federally funded program that provides for children with medical handicaps, such as what your son has. start the application process RIGHT AWAY....it could take up to six months for approval. you said social security pays for a caregiver but do they give you any other benefits? as mentioned earlier, also call united way. you may also want to call you local board of mental retardation and developmentally disabled (MRDD) to see if they can give any suggestions. it almost seems as if the government doesn't want people to get off assistance. where is the incentive when you get your benefits cut?? i wish you luck.

I am very sorry to hear of your hard luck. It may be better for you to move to a lesser paying job and get all the benefits. Do the calculations. Unfortunately Bush thinks a higher priority is to spend the money on bringing democracy to Muslims.

But this reminds me of how much better off we are in UK, where all health care is free for every one. I know that Americans have been brain washed against socialized medicine, but in UK it is the service people value most.

In a prosperous and civilized society medical and health care is a human right.

I hope you'll take this question to your pediatrician's office, and have a long talk with their insurance specialist. They have information and resources that you may not have investigated.

What a shame that the health system in this country has been overwhelmed by lawyers and management companies, to say nothing of the insurance buzzards.

Best of luck - don't give up. Your son is lucky to have you - I think we're all fortunate that there are people like you.

I have heard of insurance that did not cover pre-existing conditions for 90 or 100 days, but never completely excluded it, especially when it was done through an employer.

Someone must be able to help you with this. What about his father, doesn't he have insurance that could cover your son?

That doesn't seem right....What state are you in?

Maybe you can find some information here...

I wish I could help....I'm in a similar boat...I don't have a child w/ CP but my son has a heart condition and suffers for occasion migraines..I too started a new job to help support my family ( I am married though) and because I wanted to make a better life for my family I too make too much and lost my Medicaid coverage for the kids (I have 2) and when we tried to go through BC-BS they would not cover the pre-exiting conditions. I think it is unfair to punish the parents out there who are trying to make a better life for their kids...is there a church or charity type organization that you can contact for help?
I know this won't help any-but I will keep you in my prayers that everything will work out for you and your son.

I don't really have too many ideas. Maybe you could talk to some doctors and see what advice they might have. I know I have also seen commercials from lawyers on tv that advertise helping people that have medical conditions due to medical malpractice. I don't know your whole situation so I don't know if that would apply to you or not. I hope that you will find help soon and I will pray for you and your family.

I don't want to sound mean, but you really should have figured this all out before you took the "better paying" job.

Making a few extra bucks a week is not worth what it is costing you in lost benefits.

Get on the phone tomorrow to the local United Way and ask what resources they have in their database that can assist you. The United Way works with various agencies and you need not be destitute to get assistance. They have the experience to point you in the right direction(s) for health insurance for your son.

I've flagged the response above mine. I am so sorry there are people out there that are so inconsiderate - I can only hope that they eventually get what's coming to them.

Put him out of his misery. Do you have any idea how selfish it is to make him continue to live like that?
