We have to get rid of our cats, but only under the promise from my fiance that I can get a rabbit or a guinea pig. As an inside pet, what would be better for our family, a rabbit or guinea pig--regardless of childrens' ages?

I would highly recommend a Guinea Pig or a Hampster.
Rabbits are considered an Exotic Pet and just to have (1) one rabbit spayed or neutered will cost anywhere up from $500. Also if you get a rabbit, you must make sure that there is an Exotic Pet Veterinarian close to where you live. One visit to this special vet can be quite pricey.
Have a lovely rest of the evening.

I've never had a rabbit but I've had three guinea pigs and they are really great pets. Theyre very low maintanence and theyre great with kids. When I had them my little sister was about 3 and she loved to hold them and they never bit. But my cousin has a rabbit and they can get pretty jumpy and scratch a lot. But both are supposed to be really good family pets.

Guinea pigs tend to be more docile. Rabbits can be a little tempermenta and have mean claws that can do some damage (not as bad a sa cats though!)

Rabbits don't make good pets for young children who like to pet and play with all things furry. Like one person above me said, they can be very tempermental and most *i know from experience* don't like to be held. Plus, you've got to 'rabbit-proof' your house because they will chew on anything and everything (I had one rabbit that ate the buttons off of the tv remote control).

it depends on how old your children are, but I would suggest a chinchilla if your children aren't too small
it's soft, furry, very friendly, and has no odor! they are a combination of a rabbit and a squirrel. They are simple to take care of. It needs food, water and a dust bath! They are very clean, no fleas possible because their fur is so dense.
ours has a chinchilla safe running wheel, a hidey house, and a "perch" to sit up high...
read up on them, they are fascinating creatures!!
consider adopting them from http://www.petfinder.com and go to small and furry section

it depends on why you want it.
bunnies are god for cuddling, you can take them on walks, they usually dont have that many health problems.. but they can get big, and they reproduce like mad!!!
and the males spray.
guinea pigs.
have to have vitamin c, or else they will get scurvvy and die, they can smell kind of bad, and sometimes can be very skittish.
it really just depends how much time you have to spend with it.
