The best routes to take are to research the process of starting a business as well as the industry you're interested in.

I recommend checking out the SBA, Entrepreneur, The Start Up Journal & Nolo. All 4 are great informational resources for the new/small business owner. I posted links for you in the source box.

Associations may be a good avenue to explore. These organizations will address many of the thoughts, questions and concerns you'll inevitably have as well as many you haven't anticipated yet. See the source box for some relevant links.

Research, research, research – this cannot be stressed enough. Read as much as you can about the industry. Here are some book titles that are relevant:

* How to Start a Home-Based Catering Business, 5th by Denise Vivaldo
* How to Run a Catering Business from Home by Christopher Egerton-Thomas
* Start and Run a Catering Business by George Erdosh

* How to Start a Business in Texas: With Forms by William R. Brown and Mark Warda

There are plenty of free informational resources out there. Check the source box for links to articles.

Hope that helps! I wish you much success & happiness in all your ventures!

It depends on where you are located.

Typically, though, you will need food service permit to legally prepare and serve food as hired prior to private parties and events

Depending on your county, one common rule is that home kitchens typically do not pass the standards and are not allowed. You will need to operate and cook in an approved kitchen (often commercial kitchens)

Examples of licensing requirements for a catering business are

That can depend on where you live - however I would suggest that you take a look at the Small Business Administration website and make an appointment if you think it is necessary to discuss more in detail what you might need. Their website is http://www.sba.gov/

Check with your local courthouse on licensing and such. Food preparation requires inspections and you might even run into zoning problems if you attempt to run a business from a residential zoned location. Make sure you know what you are getting into.
