Alexander's father was an artist. He decided to go to art school, following in his father's footsteps.

I've tried "following his example", but it doesn't sound right.

I think it means doing what his father did, like his father was an artist, and he "followed his footsteps", so that would mean he because an artist.

You could try to change the sentence completely. "Alexander decided to go to the same art school as his father."

you should trying starting off the sentence with "Following his father's footsteps, he decided to attend art school."
