try simple hand excersises like squeezing rubber or silly puddy
also remember to always reach for the ball palm first
also beaware. if you feel any discomfort or the sliughtest bit of pain then buddy tape your finger with medical tape to the finger next to it to prevent further injury

Here is some thing I hope it helps..... Broken Finger Symptoms Broken fingers rarely go unnoticed. Frequently, you have immediate pain after trauma and sometimes a deformed finger either at a joint (commonly a dislocation) or through the bone as a fracture. If there is no deformity, a sharp pain usually is felt very specifically at the injury site and will get your attention. Sometimes you are not really sure if the finger is truly broken, and you try to bend the finger in question. A true fracture usually will be painful, but do not be fooled by a finger that has some range of motion and dull pain. Fractures are common. Depending on their stability, some may hurt more than others. As time goes on, usually within the next 5-10 minutes, you will notice swelling and redness of the finger. The finger will become very swollen and stiff to move. Swelling is not as specific as pain and therefore may affect the adjacent fingers as well. If the fracture is severe, bruising from released blood may be seen. Finally, if the swelling gets too massive, numbness of the finger may occur because the nerves in the fingers are compressed. Broken Finger Treatment Self-Care at Home Make a splint (immobilize your finger even if that means putting a popsicle stick or pen next to it and wrapping something around the stick and your finger). Apply ice to the injured finger as you head to an emergency department. Do not apply ice directly to your skin. Put a towel between the ice and your finger. I hope your finger gets better! =)

there's no real way of preventing it. when i started playing, i got them a lot. but as i played more and more i stopped getting them. on occassion i would get them but its probably just once in awhile. the only remedy i see about jammed fingers is keep playing basketball. the more you play the less chances you'll get jammed fingers. i guess your fingers get accustomed to the feel of the ball and most times you get jammed fingers because you least expect it.

I used to play basketball too --and had the same problem--Exactly--as I am also an artist--
I learned to tape weaker fingers that gave me problems==this gave them some added strength---and there are also some new type of elastic handgloves for sports now--Maybe this can help--
Good luck

Its gonna happen nomatter what. After a while you wont really noticed jammed fingers untill after you play. Just keep your eyes on the ball and always have your hands up ready to recieve the pass, rather than down by yoursides. also a good idea to practice makeing your hands 'soft' (relaxed and accomedating the ball).

Honestly there really isn't a way to prevent it. It's mostly luck of the draw.
