Yahoo started this site purely for profit.

This can be seen by the ethos of this site. A lot of the site is used for chatty questions and discussion, rather than actual factual questions and answers. Yahoo actually encourages this because it increases the userbase of the site - which means more advertising money for them.

You can see adverts on the site. The search engine links Answers to a general Yahoo search. To get photos into this site you have to use Yahoo 360 which is a very poor blog site, really.

They've linked the site into del.icio.us which they recently acquired.

This isn't to say this is a bad thing - Yahoo is a business and it has to make money. But you have to look at the Yahoo Answers site, and it's problems, in that light.

Yahoo is a business. The purpose of business is to make money. I personally like the free service I get from Yahoo though.

Since so many people are already on Yahoo, there is already a great community and a whole lot of brainpower here.

This site is a new way to search for answers that exists on people's mind rather than complex search techniques which are on google and the normal yahoo websearch.

Websites, like Yahoo, want to do two things:

1. Build the best content or community tools and things to do. Stuff like News, E-mail, and Answers are all good examples. Yahoo wants to build fun, interesting, and compelling things so you keep coming back to yahoo. Why? well...

2. They sell advertising on the pages. It's how they are able to keep this stuff operating for free for people like us. Some find the web-advertising annoying (some of it definitely is annoying), but it's paying Yahoo's bills, and keeping the sites free for us.

So, Yahoo will continue to build and offer fun, interesting and compelling things so we keep coming back and coming back. It's the only way they can sell their pages to advertisers.

Please note the advertisements to the left and bottom of your screen. Then calculate the number of people who see those advertisements whilst using Yahoo! answers. Multiply by $100,000.

Most Internet sites are about money in one way or another, but that doesn't mean they can't also be helpful and interesting and fun.
