I have never used it! But my grandmother used to call her sofa the davenport. LOL. I still remember. "Get your feet off the davenport". Wow. But mostly if I hear davenport I think of Davenport, Iowa. (I grew up in Silvis, right outside East Moline, IL)

I've known people, when I was a kid in the '50s and '60s, who used the word davenport all the time. I personally have never use the word, and don't really remember what piece of furniture it referred to. Foyer, though, I still use. In fact, I wouldn't know what else to call that open space you step into when entering some buildings.

Davenport - I asked my daughter about that Davenport boy that went to her high school. Foyer - I told someone my house has a foyer.

Why just today. I asked my valet to move the davenport into the foyer because I kept bumping my shin on the leg of the davenport. Unwittingly the valet actually moved it the armoire into the foyer.

Foyer -- all the time -- davenport, probably ages ago in a conversation with my grandma, who referred to her couch that way.

Hmm it's been awhile, only used it because I graduated with a guy whose last name is Davenport. And Foyer I don't know that's been awhile too.

I never used the word 'davenport'. We have a 'couch'.

As for the 'foyer', we have one so I use that word everyday.

Last time I used the word davenport was actually yesterday but probably not in the sense you are thinking. I work in the ER and one of my patients last name was Davenport.

Just now, when I read your question and said "wow, I haven't called a couch a davenport for a really long time" then I said "wow, I don't use the word foyer very often, 'cause should it be pronounced 'foy-er' or 'foy-ay'?
