That reminds me of something Pascal said in a letter:"I have made this letter longer than usual, because I lack the time to make it short." If nothing else, it makes one understand that it takes a great deal of effort to state issues with brevity.
Unfortunately, most of us write things in essays and reports and memos that are nice to know, but really don't focus on the real issue: learning how to condense and focus your statement or argument is like putting on a pair of glasses. It brings things into focus very quickly.
Writing short essays is, as you indicate, a pain. However it is a very fine talent to hone. In business, brevity and completeness is highly valued. I encourage you to spend some time working at it.
One way to approach it is to first write your normal three page or greater essay. Print out a hard copy and pick up a red pen and begin deleting, combining and generally marking the heck out of it. It will feel like murder the first several times you do it.
Now go back to your word processor. Make sure that your first sentence says exactly what it is you intend to say in the entire essay. Every thing you say from this point on should have to do directly with this statement. It may take several tries, but eventually you get good at it. Good luck!
