According to the world census bureau for employment there are currently 345,113 programmers, give or take a few thousand who have either retired or become programmers since the census was last taken in 2003. Also bear in mind that that figure doesn't only include computer programmers, but also the folks at television HQ who decide which programs get put on TV.

That's a sticky question, because there's people whos job title is "computer programmer", and people who are 'accountants" or "engineers" or "physicists" who do some programming, and all the people who do it for fun, and so on. I'll guesstimate that with 600 million Internet users, there's about 100 million people who are doing something resembling programming (even if it's PHP and Visual Basic).
